Why Should I Go for HIV Counselling and Testing?
Going for HIV counselling and testing allows you to live longer, whether you test negative or positive.
If you test negative, your New Start counsellor can help you come up with a plan to stay negative. You are encouraged to discuss your past behaviour which put you at risk for HIV and what you can do in the future to avoid these risks – coming to New Start is an opportunity to get personalized HIV and AIDS information from a trained counsellor in a private and confidential setting. In addition to New Start’s “no-names-taken” policy, all New Start staff have signed an oath of confidentiality which means nothing about you will be disclosed to others.
If you test positive, you and your counsellor can come up with a plan for you to remain healthy and live a long and productive life. Your counsellor will discuss with you lifestyle changes that will allow you to stay healthy and refer you to medical and social support services for people with HIV. HIV can be a manageable disease if you learn your status early, seek medical treatment and live a healthy lifestyle.
Whether you test positive or negative, the key to staying healthy and living longer is learning your status early. Going together with your spouse or partner to New Start is encouraged; please view couples counselling to learn more about this service.
