About Us
In our Free State Province, the HIV prevalence rate is currently 30% in the age group 15 – 29 years for women. The HSRC report for 2008 showed an overall HIV+ prevalence rate in the Free State of 12,6%. This means that in the Free State there are approximately 378,000 infected with HIV.
The project is based at the Mosamaria AIDS Ministry Centre in Abdurahmann Street, Digaretene, Bochabela, Mangaung, Bloemfontein, Free State, South Africa.
Mosamaria serves the areas of Mangaung and Botshabelo, which form part of the Motheo District, which has a population of 837,000, where 347,000 are people with no income whatsoever, and 142,000 people are registered as having an income of less than R400 per month.
The goals of Mosamaria are :
- to educate people about the real facts about HIV in order to stop the spread of HIV
- to offer voluntary confidential counselling and testing for HIV at non-medical sites so that people can know their status
- to offer care and support for People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) through Support Groups
- to assist People Living with HIV/AIDS to access correct treatment so that they can get better and live full lives
- to assist People Living with HIV/AIDS to start Income Generating Activities so that they can support themselves through our CARE Local Links Voluntary Saving and Lending Programme
- to encourage and assist People Living with HIV/AIDS to eat fresh vegetables by establishing Homestead Trench Vegetable Gardens in their own yards through our Botshabelo Garden Project
- to guide and support children who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS through our Orphan and Vulnerable Children Support Groups
